Replacing the dated Alfa Romeo 147, the Giulietta (pronounced ‘Ju-li-et-ta’) will be available in Australia in two specification levels: the Giulietta 1.4 TB MultiAir and the range-topping Giulietta QV 1750 TBi. Both are available with a six-speed manual transmission only.

The 1.4 TB MultiAir features the engine from the MiTo QV, producing 125kW and 250Nm of torque. Combined cycle fuel consumption is a very tidy 5.8 litres/100km and CO2 emissions average 134g/km. Acceleration from 0-100km/h takes 7.8 seconds.

The top-spec variant – the QV 1750 TBi – is a genuine hot hatch, with 173kW of power and 340Nm of torque. Acceleration from 0-100km/h takes just 6.8 seconds and its top speed is 242km/h. Fuel consumption is good enough at 7.6 litres/100km, and it emits CO2 at a rate of 177g/km.

At 4351mm long, 1798mm wide, 1465mm tall and with a 2634mm wheelbase, the Giulietta is 128mm longer, 69mm wider, 23mm taller and has an 88mm longer wheelbase than the 147. Curb weight is also up from 1200kg-1360kg of the 147 to 1290kg-1320kg for the Giulietta. Its luggage capacity of 350 litres is on par with other small hatches.

The Giulietta sits on an all-new platform and is one of the safest small cars on the market. In last year’s Euro NCAP testing, the Giulietta recorded an overall score of 87/100 (97 percent in the Adult Occupant test, 85 percent Child Occupant, 63 percent Pedestrian Protection, 86 percent Safety Assist).

Both variants come with six airbags, ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), electronic stability control, cornering brake control, dynamic steering torque, hydraulic brake assist and a new pre-fill function for the brakes.

Inside, standard equipment includes dual-zone climate control air conditioning, cruise control, Blue&Me hands-free communications system with voice recognition, USB port and a 60/40 split folding rear seat.

The 1.4 TB MultiAir gets 17-inch alloy wheels, while the QV 1750 TBi adds 18-inch alloys, lowered suspension, red brake calipers, dark tinted windows and Cloverleaf badging.

Outside, the headlights and taillights employ LED technology, making them brighter and more efficient than standard lamps. Daytime running lights, rear parking sensors, and front and rear fog lights are also standard on both models.

The 2011 Alfa Romeo Giulietta is available in Australia now, with prices starting at $36,990 for the Giulietta 1.4 TB MultiAir and $41,990 for the Giulietta QV 1750 TBi.
